Among the ecological treats in store when you travel to Australia are its rainforests, particularly those found on the Queensland coast. These ancient ecosystems are home to thousands of species of plants including trees that have been alive since the days of Christ. This self-drive itinerary will not only steer you into the heart of the thick green matter, but also includes the seaside resort of Noosa, at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, and the ecologically intriguing Fraser Island.
Days 1 and 2 MOUNT TAMBORINE
You’ve probably seen it on the TV, now check out the real thing. ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ was set in the rainforest of Southern Queensland. You’ll be able to commune with wildlife, including pandemelons, possums, frogs and an amazing array of birds, but stay in infinite more comfort than the celebs at O’Reilly’s, a rainforest retreat on a spur of the McPherson Range. It offers a range of activities which include interpretive walks in the rainforest, birdwatching in LamingtonNational Park and an amazing treetop walk. You’ll stay in a one bedroom mountain villa.
Days 3 and 4 NOOSA
Bordered by the sea, a river, a rainforest and native bush, Noosa offers a wide choice of outdoor activities, from jaunts by camel to boating through the mysterious Everglades. It’s also a very happening resort, with lively restaurants and beachy boutiques. You’ll spend two nights at the Sebel resort on lively Hastings Street, just a minute’s walk from the beach. The Australia Zoo is only an hour’s drive away.
Days 5 and 6 FRASER ISLAND
After dropping off your car in HerveyBay, you’ll travel by catamaran to the world’s largest sand island. We’ve included a private 4WD Eco Tour, which promises a fair chance of spotting dingoes as well as kangaroos. Also on the agenda: swims in clear freshwater lakes, walks through towering rainforest and the drive along the amazing 75 Mile Beach highway where you’ll see the wreck of the beached ship The Maheno, plus Fraser’s mighty dunes with their rainbow spectrum of coloured sands. Travel between August and October and you may well want to add a short cruise to see the migrating whales. Accommodation is at the award-winning Kingfisher Bay Resort.
Day 7 ONWARD FLIGHT
Transfer by boat and coach to HerveyBay airport for your onward flight. Or you might prefer the convenience of a helicopter straight from the resort to HerveyBay airport.
